Jugiong 2015 – Fun , Dust and Laughter

Another great Weekend in the dust.  The event ran very smoothly

The year the  weather was mild but day got rather dusty as things progressed.  There were 27 competitors, 6 tests x 2 runs each with the events starting  at 10 amand  finishing at 1 pm.   All over in 3 hours!

Mons. Andrew Collier won by 0.01 secs from Aaron W.   It was an extremely close event with four former Aust Motorkhana champs competing this year.  Not  mentioning state and class champs as well.

RCCA State Motorkhana Round – September

This year the RCCA round of the State Motorkhana Championship was held much later than usual on September 8th. As it was the last round before the National event, this allowed the Club to select tests which would be part of those to be run at the Mt Gambier event. This was appreciated by those competitors planning to head to South Australia.

A number of the tests had not been run previously as they had only just been added to the list  of approved tests. The Championship only allows one run at each test, so the multiple runs, with extra practice, were appreciated.  Congratulations to Andrew Collier who was the outright winner on the day.

Rnd 1 NSW Motorkhana

Hot and 34 Degrees was the weather prediction for the 1st round of NSW Motorkhana championship.  Another long hot day I murmured to myself as I awoke.  Luckily, the day was neither hot nor long.  Rain in the morning and overcast skies for most of the day saw pleasant temperatures and an initial  wet ground giving way to a cool dry surface.

Attendance to this round was expected to be down due to the MINI club’s 50th anniversary celebration seeing the absence of minis, mokes and A series powered specials.  Despite this attendance came close to 20 entrants which did make for a more relaxing day which concluded about 3:00 pm.

Ted Merewether and Dave Collier competed with their kids in road going Renaults while Sam and Andrew tore up the ground in the R16 powered special (Despite a bit of a miss).  Phil East and Daughter also demonstrated some blistering performances in their Honda powered special.

Ernst initially ran the beautiful Alpine while Sonja ran the Cuppa Coffee. However Ernst had problems with the wipers and cohabited with Sonja in the Cappuccino.Today was certainly a WD for him.  Never mind Ernst next time you will have a blinder!!

CAMS ‘Come and Try’ day a Big Success

Sometimes if difficult to gauge how an event will run over the course of a day.  The weather, unexpected incidents , and the general entropy that underlies motorsport can make or break a day.  Indeed the CAMS try-out day was to be an unknown from conception. At the beginning of the day an over subscription of 30 entrants looked to be a bad omen with the RCCA and Thornleigh Car Club members forced to be pessimistic about “the average Joe off the street , having a go”. We were all prepared for the worst..

Far from expectations however, the days proceeding’s went smoothly and without incident.  Approximately 165 competitors tried out the motorkhana event co run by RCCA and Thornleigh.  The ‘try-outee’s we all well behaved, enthusiastic and all seem to leave the event with a huge smile on their dials.  The instructors from both clubs did an absolutely sterling  job at instructing and coaching drivers – and huge improvements were seen on second and third runs.

The day was mostly overcast in the morning with the Sun coming out in the afternoon to kick the humidity in to the highly uncomfortable setting.  However the stewards, timers and instructors kept at it and ensured all had a great day on the skid pan.

I believe the event has proven to be a success giving the young (and older) entrants and positive view of the sport in general and now is time to put down the playstation and do it for real :) Some very good drivers were noted and we hope that these type of events will bring young blood and enthusiasm back into the sport.
